Companies often offer paid sick leave as part of their full time employee benefits packages. Part time workers, who are often employed in businesses with high turnover rates, are typically not offered such paid sick leave or some of the other full time benefits. That may be changing. There is talk of broadening the requirement of paid sick leave for workers whether part time or full time. This is even being discussed and may be mandated on the federal level.
As of July 1, 2015 California has changed their state policy to mandate paid sick leave for part time employees. This mandate has also been adopted in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington which has been abiding by it since 2012. These localities generally use an accrual program which mandates one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. This looks like the wave of the future for more equitable consideration for employees regardless of where they live and work.
If you are in a state that has not adopted this legislation yet, you might want to think ahead and make sure you have the technology to manage the new requirements when they are put into effect. Even though your company is not affected yet, with acquisitions, expansions, or updated legislation, paid sick leave for all employees could in time become a feature of your employee benefits program.
