Many regions and states, like Michigan on March 29, 2019, have joined the trend to legislate mandatory paid time off. Historically, paid sick leave has been reserved for full-time employees in conjunction with PTO plans or benefits packages. Part-time employees such as those in the hospitality or restaurant industry, among others, are often not provided with this benefit and are not compensated for missed work days. However, new mandates are requiring that sick leave benefits apply to all employees. The general rule is one hour of paid sick leave for every thirty hours worked, but specifics can vary from region to region. To further complicate compliance, the local mandates may apply to any employee working within a government boundary or region, regardless of which state or region the employee resides in.
If this legislation has not become effective in your area, mandatory sick leave may become so in the near future, as the trend continues.
For this reason, you’ll want to have a system in place to manage paid sick leave and other types of paid time off, mandated or otherwise. Human Resources and Payroll teams bear the brunt of managing often large numbers of requests for compensation. In order to simplify administration and minimize staff burden, Integrity Data has developed the Comprehensive Leave Manager for use with Microsoft Dynamics GP Payroll solution.
Because mandates vary from region to region, Comprehensive Leave Manager is a flexible system that allows you to custom-define rules for various types of paid time off, such as vacation days, sick days, etc. It can handle an unlimited number of leave codes and can organize and manage requirements such as compliance, maximum accruals, waiting periods, carryover limits and simple payout transactions. Because it is automated, the Comprehensive Leave Manager will save valuable staff time and protect against human error.
